The Legend of Regenerative Creativity

It all began with a painting…

In the fall of 2023 I had this sudden calling to take a painting I was working on out to a yurt in the forest. I had never done anything like this before, but I had been saying yes to a lot of new things since leaving my teaching job of 20 years due to burnout. While I was there, alone in the forest, I painted and wrote and observed my painting, and as I spent time moving between each of these creative acts the messages from the painting began to reveal themselves.

I noticed that the small words I had written on the painting, my core words for 2023, began to fit into a cycle. The more I wrote and worked with the words the more clear the cycle became. I realized that after burning out from the way I use to work, I had subconsciously been looking for a new way. Through accessing my own information I had birthed a process that allowed me to find my own unique way of working. I could already see how this process would allow me to bring my creations into the world with so much more joy and ease. I was in awe! It was like the ideas just popped out of me: I hadn’t “thought” them into existence, I had painted them! It made me wonder what part of me was creating this?

Two years later, this painting would answer the question, “what part of me is creating all of this?” Keep reading to discover the answer.

I spent the next year living and creating into the Regenerative Creativity cycle. I found the phases popping up everywhere!

  • When friends would share with me that they have so many cool ideas for their creative businesses, but didn’t know which one to choose, I found myself saying, “That’s because you are in the Curiosity phase”.

  • After participating in a big art show I honor the Freedom phase of Regenerative Creativity by creating a commemorative collage to hang in my studio; Intentionally celebrating the completion of that creative pursuit.

  • I lovingly decorated the lobby in my studio with blue velvet couches and vintage chairs as part of my Beauty cycle.

In that same year I created classes to see if others could access their own way of working through Regenerative Creativity. I travelled around with my 8 phases of the cycle and met so many beautiful individuals! I felt all the feels from extreme terror (how would I create eight, three hour classes that included guided painting, visualizations, meditations, sharing circle, not to mention all the advertising, material set up and technical learning needed to host online!) to overflowing gratitude when guest would share their experience in the Red Thread circle. The stories they shared encouraged me that this truly was something special!

To reach even more guests I attended festivals and brought along my Community Canvas, a place where anyone can paint and connect in the spirit of the event.  Here I shared what I had learned through living and creating through Regenerative Creativity.  My community grew, along with my confidence in myself and my process. I knew this is what I wanted to dedicating the rest of my life to exploring!

Now Is Your Time!

Here it is! This is YOUR fresh canvas, full of potential and ready for you to start your self exploration journey.

Painting in your own home or studio is so cozy and intimate. Here are the supplies you will need to get your creative vibes sparking!

Paint

I use student grade acrylic paints in my studio classes, and professional grade paints for my personal paintings. I recommend using what you feel comfortable with. Low cost paints generally have less pigment and a more jelly texture so don’t expect them to give you the same intense colors and smooth application as more quality paints. If you are new to acrylics I encourage you to get curious and buy a variety of small tubes that fit your budget! I have experimented with dollar store paint and some colors work great.

Brushes

In intuitive painting, any and all brushes are great! I like to have a “pointy” brush, that acts kind of like a pencil, for making wandering lines. For filling in and covering large areas with paint, a flat brush works great: I call this my “painting the fence” brush. A coarse, horse hair brush comes in handy for flicking star dust. In our community we also love a big, fat brush for making bold marks! I mainly use student grade brushes in all my work because I treat them rough!

Canvas

We work mainly on pre-stretched canvas as it provides a sturdy surface to work on. Canvas panels are also great and are even more durable. I have used all levels of quality of canvases so choose the price that suites you.

Easel or no easel?

I love painting on an easel! A stand easel allows me to switch from standing to sitting which keeps me healthy and flexible. You absolutely can paint flat on a table, but I recommend figuring out a way to tilt your canvas for times when you want the paint to drip.

Palette

A palette is the place you put your blobs of paint while you are painting. I have tried lots of different types from ones you purchase to old yogurt lids or glass panels. My current favorite is a clipboard with a piece of scale paper clipped to it. You can buy a whole box of 2000 sheets of scale paper at restaurant supply shops or online and it will likely last you a lifetime. When I am done I either throw it out or save it for making mixed media art.

Spray Bottle

We love to drip paint! I have both a regular and a small, fine mist spray bottle I picked up at a dollar store.

Rags

Simply your best friend for clean up, rubbing out marks you want to change and catching drippy paint. I keep old towels and t-shirts for this purpose.
